Getting Connected
My answer to discussion question #3: After reading Chapter 4 I have been forced to rethink my speech topic so that y'all might listen to me (no I am not from the south, I just thought "you all" sounded to formal :) ). I found this chapter to be very helpful with ideas to choose a subject that would be interesting to all of us. I also found my self envious of the speaking to entertain highlights mentioned. Oh...If I could tell a good joke or perform a little magic trick how much more interesting my speech would be. I really enjoy listening to a good speaker that not only informs and entertains but has me leaving with the desire to change something no matter how small. However, having said that, I still cannot find the extrovert in me that wants to have everyone in the room pay attention to what I am saying. I have no magical abilities but If I really get courageous maybe I'll try throwing in a joke. Anyone know a joke, suitable for all, that won't make me blush?

I have encountered the same situation as yours that it is not easy to select a popular topic to cater for audiences. As the upcoming presentation next week, I still couldn’t decide which topic I should use. After reading your post, I deeply recall your words, “a good speaker that not only informs and entertains but has me leaving with the desire to change something no matter how small,” and rethink what’s kind of beneficial messages I should deliver to my audiences. Moreover, it is good thing that you are self-conscious about public speaking; I believe you will overcome these obstacles to perform a perfect presentation. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI know that with me, when I am speaking up front I usually want to get through my speech as quickly as possible since I am not too fond of being up front. That usually results in my talk being boring and sometimes ending up with me talking a little fast. Since one of my jobs actually requires me to be up front for a couple of minutes twice a week, I have become just a little more comfortable and have tried to say something a little bit entertaining to keep their attention. And regarding keeping the topic interesting, I ended up changing mine too. Hopefully everyone will find my second topic to be a little more interesting! :)
